Abstract | This annual report (often referred to as the Trends report) is the authoritative reference on new light-duty (or personal) vehicle carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, fuel economy, and powertrain technology trends in the United States. These vehicles include passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, minivans, and all but the largest pickup trucks and vans. This report uses the most comprehensive database of its kind, both because it is comprised of detailed new vehicle data provided, under statute, to EPA by automobile manufacturers, and because the database has been rigorously maintained since 1975. Since major methodological changes are propagated backwards through the historical database in order to maintain the integrity of long-term trends, this report supersedes all previous versions in the series and should compared to past reports. Except where noted, all data in this report reflect the 99+ percent of all new personal vehicles that are dedicated to or are expected to operate primarily on gasoline or diesel fuel (including flexible fuel and conventional hybrid vehicles). |
