The 1-acre Curcio Scrap Metal site encompasses two active scrap metal recycling businesses and associated warehouses in Saddle Brook Township, Bergen County, New Jersey. The site is situated above the Brunswick Formation which is a sole source aquifer. The formation supplies potable water to the public and private wells in the area. Since 1975, Curcio Scrap Metal, Inc. (CSMI) and Cirello Iron and Steel Company (CISC) have recycled scrap metals products onsite. Samples taken from the area and from onsite soil in 1984 revealed contamination by VOCs, organics, and metals. EPA issued an Administrative Order on Consent to the PRPs on May 27, 1988. Remedial Investigation activities were initiated in 1989 by the PRPs under the terms of the Order. The Record of Decision (ROD) provides a final remedy for the first operable unit (OU1), the approximately 1,800 cubic yards of contaminated onsite soil. Future RODs will address other ground and surface water contamination. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil are PCBs and metals including lead. The selected remedial action for this site is included. |
