Abstract |
Particulate impact has been used for the detection and measurement of raindrops and micrometeorites for several decades. Aerosols might be detected in the same way if the suspension is expanded rapidly when it enters through a capillary in a nearly evacuated vessel. If the accelerating capillary is relatively long and the pressure inside the vessel below 1 torr, particulate beams are obtained. They enable the study of particle velocities, their rebound properties, etc. For particulate beam conditions, impact sensing is mass concentration proportional, grain size and substance independent, and sensitivity may rate from the detection of single particle to the range of mg/(m cubed). With short nozzles and chamber pressure above 1 torr, impact sensing remains possible but marked grain size dependence and possible substance dependence complicate the phenomenon. |
