There is no universal toxic monitor capable of monitoring all materials that are toxic to humans. The best that can be done is to qualitatively detect the presence of the most likely toxic materials in certain applications. In this paper, five classes of analyzers are reviewed that are capable of detecting one or more toxic materials or their surrogates. Recommendations are made to automate each of these systems for on-line operations. The classes of analyzers as used in this paper are: life function monitors, enzymatic response, respirometers, organic halide monitors and specific monitoring for surrogates using such equipment as on-line gas chromatographs. |
