Abstract |
The study was undertaken to provide a better understanding of colloid removal in filter beds. The influence of chemical and physical parameters are evaluated and a model presented to correlate physical filtration parameters to removal efficiency. The removal of the virus Escherichia coli bacteriophage T4 is studied in beds of activated carbon. The report has been divided into three major parts: Studies on the chemical nature and behavior of activated carbon in water; The mechanism of virus absorption on activated carbon; and The physical aspects of filtration. A transport model, based on diffusional transfer in a flowing fluid, is correlated to experimental data. |
