Abstract |
In the Imperial and Coachella Valleys in Southern California, installation of tile drainage has been necessary following expanded irrigation activity and use of Colorado River water. However, the flow of water into and through tile drainage lines is often restricted by the gradual accumulation of iron and manganese deposits. The purpose of the study was to construct and test laboratory models simulating drainage through a tile joint in order to gain better understanding of the processes involved in the plugging of tile joints with iron and manganese deposits. Microscopic examinations of the deposits revealed large numbers of bacteria. Tests show that biological oxidation could be dominant over a chemical process in the plugging process. |
