Abstract |
This report describes the successful demonstration of the ability of a CO2 Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) to measure remotely the velocity of the effluent from a power plant smoke stack. The basis of the technique is that laser radiation backscattered from particulates in the effluent is Doppler shifted infrequency in proportion to the velocity of the effluent. Measurements were made against a coal burning power plant equipped with electrostatic precipitators to remove particulates from the boiler flue gases. Based on the results of the measurements a study on the design of an LDV optimized for the measurement of power plant effluent velocities was performed. |
