Abstract |
Most research pertaining to water quality and treatment methods conducted in the United States in the last decade utilized pilot-scale components. This project employed full-sized filters, post-filtration contactors and carbon regeneration furnace at one site to study carbon's ability to remove organics from Ohio River Water. Various GAC bed depths and types were studied in order to compare organic removal efficiencies, bed lives, general water quality characteristics, the need of a sand underlayer and operational problems. Pilot-scale GAC components were also used to determine the reliability of pilot columns as indicators of the performance of full-scale components. The relative performance of lignite and bituminous-based GAC was also studied in pilot columns. In the most important phase of this project, the relative performance of GAC filters to post-filtration GAC contactors was studied along with the most advantageous empty bed contact time for the GAC contactors and the effectiveness of on-site GAC regeneration. Finally, a significant aspect of this project was the development of preliminary cost estimates for full-plant conversion to GAC. Volume I is the detailed report. |
