Abstract | The paper gives results of inhouse emissions testing and a literature review relating to Orimulsion, an emulsion of Venezuelan bitumen, water, and a proprietary surfactant, being used as a fuel for utilities in Canada, China, Denmark, Italy, Japan, and Lithuania, primarily as a replacement for heavy fuel oil. EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory is conducting a study of air pollutant emissions from Orimulsion combustion, based on an externally reviewed technology assessment plan. The inhouse combustion testing measured emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide, and several metals. Measurements were made for Orimulsion and for a high-sulfur heavy fuel oil to provide a basis for comparison. |
