Abstract |
Cleanup operations at inactive hazardous waste sites are now underway throughout the country. Thousands of workers are involved in the national effort. Because of the potential hazards inherent in such operations, an interagency committee, consisting of the National Institute for Occupational Health, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the U.S. Coast Guard, has developed guidelines for protecting worker health and safety at inactive hazardous waste sites. The booklet summarizes those guidelines and presents key issues to consider in designing, implementing, or evaluating a health and safety program for work at inactive hazardous waste sites. Much of the information is also relevant to planning for response to emergencies involving hazardous substances. The booklet is geared for nontechnical personnel. |
