Abstract |
This report reviews the potential environmental hazard from the commercial use of 2-mercaptobenzothiazoles (MBT). Most of the mercaptobenzothiazoles are consumed as rubber accelerators in vulcanization processes, although the sodium salt of MBT is used as a corrosion inhibitor in water-based cooling systems. Information on physical and chemical properties, production methods and quantities, commercial uses and factors affecting environmental contamination, as well as information related to health and biological effects, are reviewed. |
