The Travel Model Improvement Program (TMIP) is a cooperative effort among organizations involved in transportation, land development, and environmental protection. The program will seek active technical involvement and financial participation from state departments of transportation (DOTs), local governments and metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), environmental agencies, and private sector entities. The objectives of the TMIP are: To increase the policy sensitivity of existing travel forecasting procedures and their capacity to respond to emerging issues including environmental concern, growth management, and changes in personal and household activity patterns, along with the traditional transportation issues. To design the travel forecasting process to reflect today's traveler behavior, to respond to greater information needs placed on the forecasting process, and to take advantage of changes in data collection technology; and, To make travel forecasting model results more useful for decision makers. This report presents a summary of the conference presentations and highlights the recommendation made by the workshop participants. It is anticipated that future conferences will be held to provide continous outreach and direction to TMIP.
