Abstract | Reduction of thermal and organic pollution by heated water from the direct contact condensers on vacuum evaporators in a beet sugar factory was studied by treating samples in a laboratory-size packed column. Cooling of the water, bio-oxidation of dissolved organic matter (primarily sucrose), and removal of nitrogen (primarily as ammonia) were achieved by counter-current contact between descending water and a rising air stream. Organic content, as measured by COD values, was reduced. The cooling data were correlated by the equation, K(y) A = 0.54 G where K(y)A IS POUNDS OF WATER EVAPORATED PER HOUR, FT3 OF PACKING, UNIT HUMIDITY DIFFERENCE, AND G is lbs air flow per hour, ft2 cross section. Adjusted temperature change in the column ranged from a low of 22 degrees (122 degrees in, 100 degrees out) to a high of 42 degrees (121 degrees in, 79 degrees out). |
