Abstract
Cedar Rapids, Iowa used pilot plant studies as an effective approach to an economic solution to dewatering secondary digested sludge. After piloting several dewatering processes, the pressure filter system was selected and a full scale plant was constructed as the first major installation in the United States. Performance data from the full scale plant was evaluated over a period of approximately nine months. This data indicates that the full scale plant is capable of operation at a greater capacity and efficiency than that projected from pilot plant data. Both fly ash and sludge ash were evaluated as a filter aid, with and without chemicals. Economic evaluations were made of operation and equipment. (Modified author abstract)
