Abstract
The potential toxocities due to dermal exposure to six shale-derived hydrocarbon mixtures were evaluated using rats. Animals were dosed five days per week for four weeks. The application site was occluded six hours after dosing. Dose levels for each test article were 0.25 g/kg and 2.5 g/kg. The control group was sham treated. Body weights, food consumption, overt toxicity, and dermal responses were recorded. Blood was obtained at the end of the study and used for hematology and clinical chemistry evaluations. A selection of approximately twenty different organs or tissues from the control and high-dose animals plus all lesions was evaluated microscopically.
