Abstract
The report presents results from studies of biogenic hydrocarbon emissions conducted in Lancaster, Pennsylvania during 1979 and Seattle, Washington during 1980. The principal objective of the studies was to compare a branch enclosure method with a micrometeorological gradient technique for measuring biogenic hydrocarbon fluxes for forested areas. A second important objective for the Pennsylvania work was to develop a regional natural hydrocarbon emission inventory for use in the Northeast Regional Oxidant Study. Emission fluxes determined by the gradient profile procedure were in reasonably good agreement with those measured using the bag enclosure technique. Largest differences occurred at low emission levels and could partly be due to measurement uncertainty. Isoprene emissions from a deciduous forest in Lancaster, Pennsylvania correlated well with temperature. Alpha-pinene emission in a pine forest near Seattle, Washington correlated with ambient relative humidity. Total biogenic hydrocarbon emissions from the State of Pennsylvania was estimated to be 3400 tons/day during August.
