Abstract |
This semi-rural site has been a sand and gravel mining operation owned by Western Sand and Gravel, Inc., since 1953. In 1975 approximately 12 acres of the 20-acre site were used for the disposal of 480,000 gallons of liquid wastes, including chemicals and sewage waste. These wastes were dumped into unlined lagoons and seepage pits. Ground water contamination has occurred at the site and a plume of contamination is moving towards domestic wells adjacent to the site. The selected cost-effective remedial alternative includes: the installation of a permanent alternate water supply to service approximately 56 parcels of land, and the installation of carbon canister filters as a temporary abatement measure for 8 homes with contaminated wells until the permanent water supply is functional. |
