Abstract
The Syncon Resins site encompasses approximately 15 acres and is located in a heavily industrialized area of northern New Jersey. The Syncon Resin facility produced alkyd resin carriers for pigments, paints, and varnish products. In the production process excess xylene or toluene was separated from the wastewater and reused in subsequent reactions. The remaining wastewater was subsequently pumped to an unlined leaching pond (lagoon) to evaporate or percolate into the soil. The sampling performed during the remedial investigation indicated extensive onsite contamination in the soil, ground water, building dirt/dust, and stainless vessels and tanks. Four general classes of chemical contaminants were found onsite: organic compounds, pesticides, PCBs and metals.
