In view of the 7-fold growth in the amount of plastic waste over the past 20 years the impact of plastic refuse disposal upon the environment has been evaluated on the basis of the major current methods of disposal, municipal incineration, landfill and litter. While weight percentage of the plastic component may tend to be used to evaluate its contribution to the environmental impact via incineration, the volume percentage of plastics is more important with respect to its contribution to landfill, both sanitary and open dump with and without burning. A useful life analysis of plastic products is described which quantifies the amounts of plastic waste by type.
