Abstract
Three cruises were conducted from August to October 1973 in the vicinity of the Straits of Mackinac. Environmental conditions were influenced by the net transport of water from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron, the oscillatory flow of water produced by seiches between the two lakes and the hypolimnetic transport of water from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan during periods of thermal stratification. Different water masses resulted from the mixing of waters from Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior and were identified from single parameters, particularly silica, nitrate, pH, temperature and specific conductance, from cluster analysis of chemical and physical parameters and from ordination analyses of phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages.
