Abstract |
The paper discusses a program being conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), aimed at complete environmental assessment (EA) of the fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) of coal. It reviews the EA methodology being developed by EPA: identification of current technology and environmental background, including development of a list of 'the universe of potential pollutants;' development of environmental objectives via the Multimedia Environmental Goals (MEG) chart; comprehensive analysis of emissions from operating FBC systems; assessment of existing control technology; analysis of environmental control alternatives, using a Source Analysis Model (SAM) approach; and identification of further data and technology needs. It discusses the early status of applying each methodology step for the EA of FBC. It reviews EPA's ultimate goal of supporting environmental standards for FBC. It describes briefly the status of FBC technology. |
