Abstract
This study is one of 70 volumes assessing the workforce needs (manpower needs) for pollution control and abatement in the United States for the five-year period of 1976 through 1981. Seven fields for pollution control - air, noise, pesticides, potable water, radiation, solid waste, and wastewater -- are analyzed, together with energy-related programs currently accentuated by the national effort to solve energy supply problems. The report contains abstracts of Federal environmental legislation. An attempt was made to deal with major legislation in each of the eight program areas being studied. For the most part, these laws are administered by the Environmental Protection Agency; however, the Federal Energy Administration is active in the energy area, and the Atomic Energy Commission and Nuclear Regulatory Commission have roles in controlling radiation. Also, the Department of Commerce and the Coast Guard enforce many off-shore water pollution control efforts. Much of the legislation for which citations are given is directly involved with conservation and is administered by the Department of the Interior.
