Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compile selected information concerning the manufacture and use of activated carbon, with particular emphasis on product quality as related to the presence of heavy metal ions and/or polynuclear aromatic compounds. Specific areas of interest were the raw materials and methods of production; manufacturers, production capacities, and actual production; types of final products; and consumption patterns of activated carbon. Product quality specifications for heavy metal ions and polynuclear aromatic compounds in the final products were investigated. U.S. production quantities have exceeded 200 million pounds annually for the past 3 to 4 years. Of the estimated 180 million pounds consumed in the United States in 1975, about 37% was employed in food and pharmaceutical areas, 25% in water or waste treatment processes, and 38% in other applications. Activated carbon for use in foods and pharmaceuticals conforms to the Food Chemicals Codex specifications for heavy metal ions and polynuclear aromatics. Products for municipal water treatment are subject to AWWA standards. Activated carbon for other uses are subject only to customer specifications.
