Abstract
This report describes hazardous waste generation and management in industrial establishments which manufacture special industry machinery, Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) 355, and office, computing and accounting machines, SIC 357. Based upon industry data available in the literature and collected during thirty-three plant surveys, land-disposed process wastes of both industries were found to fall into five process-defined categories: machine shop, heat treating, electroplating, materials coating, and foundry (includes ferrous and non-ferrous). Specific process waste types are characterized as to their chemical constituents and physical properties. Treatment and disposal technologies and attendant costs for each category of process wastes are described at three levels of technology: the most prevalent technology currently in use, best technology currently employed and technology for adequate health and environmental protection. Total process waste and hazardous constituent quantities were estimated for each of the five categories in two industries on a national level and disaggregated by EPA Regions and states.
