The Environmental Engineering Committee made the following technical recommendations to the Environmental Protection Agency based on its review of the current Land Disposal Research Program: Pollutant characterization projects should, in particular, be conducted for large volume wastes and leachates, municipal solid waste and leachates, and incinerator ashes and leachates. EPA should pursue field-scale, long-term research to obtain a fuller technical understanding of the performance of cover and liner systems. The emphasis on land disposal closure and post-closure operations and monitoring should be increased because many land disposal facilities recently have been closed and others will be closed.
