Abstract
As part of its statutory role in the authorisation, monitoring and research relating to radioactive wastes discharged into the aquatic environment, the Aquatic Environment Protection Division of the Directorate of Fisheries Research (DFR), Lowestoft routinely carries out analyses for a substantial number of radionuclides in a wide range of environmental materials. The Ministry of a Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has for many years required information about the concentrations of strontium radionuclides in waters, sediments and biological materials. There are not absolute standard methods for such radiochemical analysis; indeed none are required because methodology is continually developing. A very considerable amount of expertise has been developed in the analysis of radiostrontium at the Laboratory since the late 1950s, when detailed analysis first commenced, and the procedures described in this report have been developed and tested over a long period of time with a view to achieving the highest analytical quality. Full details of the practical, analytical and computational procedures, as currently used, are given in the Appendix. (Atomindex citation 20:074619)
