Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been utilized for semiquantitative analysis and confirmation of mixtures of p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE. Several known mixtures have been analyzed as well as pesticide residues isolated from human adipose tissue of an occupationally exposed individual and animal liver tissue from rats dosed with p,p'-DDT. The relative error found for the mole fractions of p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE is standard mixtures of these materials ranged from 0.5 to 4.1%, depending on the relative concentrations of pesticides present. Gas chromatographic analyses performed on the tissue extracts by electron capture and electrical conductivity detection agreed well with the results obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance. |
