Abstract |
The health assessment document for Polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) provides the scientific data base for utilization by U.S. EPA in its activities related to the Clean Air Act. PCDFs are a group of widespread and environmentally stable halogenated tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. They enter the environment as trace impurities in PCBs, Chlorophenols, PCNs, 2,4,5-T formulations and as a result of diverse combustion processes. PCBFs bioacumulate in exposed human and animal adipose rich tissues. They are extremely toxic to animals and humans. Their toxic effects are very similar to those caused by 2,3,7,8-TCDD. Information on adverse health effects in humans has been derived from the observation in the isolated Japanese and Tiawanese population who accidentally consumed PCBs and PCDF-contaminated rice oil. |
