Abstract
The objective of this study was to conduct smelter inspections and engineering analyses of existing, planned, available or potentially available SO2 control systems in support of preparation of regulations for copper smelters in the Arizona portion of Region IX. The inspections and analyses were to assess the (1) feasibility of upgrading existing or planned permanent controls, (2) feasibility of operational changes to improve control, and (3) applicability of available or potentially available constant emission control technology. A total of seven copper smelters in the State of Arizona were reviewed. The major source of uncontrolled SO2 emissions at the present time in the average smelter is the reverberatory furnace since most smelters control converter offgases. Alternate control techniques are discussed in general.
