Abstract |
The report summarizes the need for, and the background work done on, adjusting the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) miles per gallon (MPG) values to more closely correspond to actual fuel economy experience on the road. The majority of the report deals with the derivation of mathematical algorithms that could be used to perform the needed adjustment. Using an extensive data base of in-use fuel-economy, algorithms are developed which depend on certain design features of motor vehicles. Substantial improvements in the accuracy of the Fuel Economy Labeling and Gas Mileage Programs will result when adjustments to the current values are adopted. |
