Abstract
The report presents basic information on Diesel engine technology, emissions, and emission controls, and describes a number of options for reducing emissions from both new vehicles and those which are already in use. Although Diesels produce many different types of pollutants, one of the most significant (as well as visually obvious) pollutants is soot and other particulate matter. One effective measure for eliminating these emissions is to substitute an alternative, non-soot producing fuel for Diesel fuel. Natural gas and methanol show particular promise in this regard. This may require substituting another type of engine as well.
