Abstract |
The first year of a program designed to test procedures and develop approaches for interdisciplinary, problem-oriented research is described through the examination of the problems encountered in a northeastern Wisconsin recreational lake. The program was initiated to provide viable alternative resource management strategies. The first phase of the project included a determination of the nature of the lake from investigations of the biology, chemistry and economics of the lake basin. The biological problems associated with the lake and the societal difficulties in achieving a solution to the problem are discussed. The requirements placed upon academic institutions engaged in interdisciplinary problem-oriented research programs are outlined briefly. (Author) |
