Abstract |
Near the western border of Colorado, the Colorado River is the habitat of four threatened and endangered fish species as well as the receiving water course for sewage effluent from the cities of Grand Junction and Fruita. An extensive monitoring program was conducted to sample four water quality parameters which affect the concentration of un-ionized ammonia, a substance toxic to fishes at high concentrations. Temperature, pH, total ammonia and flow were measured for thirteen months along a 20 km reach of the river. Collected data and historical data were compared and analyzed to establish representative background conditions on a monthly basis. These conditions were then used to determine the monthly total ammonia loading allocations for the proposed wastewater treatment facilities at each of the two cities that would maintain a safe level of un-ionized ammonia in the river. |
