Abstract
One of the principal requirements for water in the future is for the dilution of effluent resulting from the treatment of municipal sewage and industrial wastes which are disposed of in our rivers. It was necessary for use in the overall water supply-demand study that quantitative data be obtained as to the requirements for riverflows for pollution abatement at various levels of waste treatment. Shortcut methods were developed for approximating dilution water requirements as a supplemental measure for control of water quality in rivers, and these methods have been used to provide estimates of water requirements for pollution abatement for use in the committee's supply-demand studies. The method is a new one and is highly complex. It is based on extrapolations of methods heretofore used only for dealing with pollution loads in short reaches of river.
