A method was developed for the determination of seven thiophosphate compounds (aspon, dichlofenthion, famphur, fenitrothion, fonophos, phosmet, and thionazin) in wastewaters. The method development program consisted of a literature review; determination of extraction efficiency for each compound from water into methylene chloride; development of a deactivated Florisil cleanup procedure; and determination of suitable gas chromatographic (GC) analysis conditions. Extraction and cleanup procedures were developed to provide 85 percent or greater recoveries of these compounds from water. A packed column GC-AFD analysis procedure was also developed. The final method was applied to wastewater from a manufacturer of malathion and to Columbus Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) secondary effluent in order to determine the precision and accuracy of the method. The wastewaters were spiked with the seven compounds at levels of 50 micrograms/l and 500 micrograms/l, respectively. Recoveries for the seven compounds were in the 85 to 89 percent range at both concentration levels. Method detection limits (MDLs) for the seven compounds in distilled water were in the 1 to 20 micrograms/l range. MDLs in wastewaters may be higher due to interfering compounds.
