Abstract | Ground water from a total of ten septic tank systems around the country has been sampled and analyzed for inorganic ions, bacteria, viruses, and chromatographable trace level organics (C-TLOs). Generally, the distribution box at each site was sampled and taken to be input to the soil adsorption field. The primary emphasis of the work has been C-TLOs. From preliminary studies, twenty-two C-TLOs were targeted for quantitation. These 22 compounds included: chloroform, trichloroethylene toluene, dichlorobenzenes, naphthalene, skatole, p(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol, benzophenone, and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, several of which are priority pollutants. Concentration of the 22 target compounds varied from a high of about 300 micrograms/l in the distribution boxes to a high of about 15 micrograms/l in the ground water wells. |
