Each of the various types of alternative wastewater collection systems is described in terms of its component parts, design features, operation and maintenance requirements and optimum application site conditions. The relative popularity of these systems during the past ten years in small U.S. communities under the innovative/alternative (I/A) technology provisions of the Federal Construction Grants Program is also discussed, along with potential explanations of relative numbers of applications.
