Abstract |
The report represents EPA's assessment of radiation doses due to radioactive fallout from both atmospheric nuclear test during the fall of 1976. This assessment is based upon data from EPA's national monitoring program for fallout. Primarily, this assessment focuses on the potential for radiation exposures due to fallout materials in pasteurized milk after the September 26, 1976, nuclear test. The potential doses from inhalation of radioactive aerosols following this test were very small. Also, fallout levels after the November 17, 1976, nuclear test were below or barely at measurable levels. Consequently, the only potential doses of significance were attributed to consumption of pasteurized milk after the September 26 nuclear test. Conclusions are as follows: (1) These two nuclear weapons tests will not contribute significantly to thyroid cancer deaths in the United States; (2) There were no significant exposures to commercial airline passengers or employees as a result of flights following the November detonation; (3) ERAMS data can be used to make reasonable estimates of doses to the population of the United States due to radioactivity in the environment. |
