Understanding and Control of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Air Emissions Request for Applications (RFA)
EPA recently awarded five grants for a total of $4.6 million to advance approaches for monitoring and quantifying landfill emissions of methane and hazardous air pollutants, improve understanding of factors that affect these emissions, and evaluate strategies for reducing emissions. These projects will investigate the use of a wide range of measurement techniques, from lower-cost sensors to higher-end instrumentations; utilize measurements taken from multiple platforms, including networks of fixed-point/stationary surface measurements and ground-based mobile and aerial platforms; and integrate measurements with various modeling approaches and satellite data. Collectively, this portfolio will ultimately advance the scientific foundation for the detection and quantification of landfill emissions and lead to more effective mitigation strategies for reducing emissions that cause climate change and increase health risks to people in neighboring communities.
