Alfred University

The Center for Environmental and Energy Research (CEER) at Alfred University is a multidisciplinary research and education program. CEER utilizes Alfred's expertise in ceramic engineering, materials science/engineering, and related programs to develop new materials, processes, products, and programs that promote environmental sustainability. CEER has the following objectives:

1. Development of advanced materials and processes for clean, renewable energy.
2. Improvements in materials efficiency, environmental impact and recycling.

CEER was founded in 1997 as the Center for the Engineered Conservation of Energy (EnCo) and operated through the Office for Research and Sponsored Programs at Alfred University. The goal of the center was to cultivate multidisciplinary faculty involvement in research and education projects in the general areas of energy and environmental studies, and to seek program support and funding for a "green" building project to house expanded environmental studies and engineering activities.

Now named the Center for Environmental and Energy Research, the center received an appropriation of $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for FY 2000. CEER establishes partnerships with industry in conducting research and disseminating information. An objective is to assist companies in maintaining a sound industrial base and infrastructure without sacrificing the quality of our environment. In addition to graduate research, CEER funds summer undergraduate projects involving students and faculty mentors. The program educates students in applying their field of study to addressing environmental and energy issues.

CEER's goals are to become a world leader in developing materials and processes for achieving environmental sustainability, and the world leader in developing ceramic materials for environmental benefits.
