Objective:

The Center will conduct well integrated, interdisciplinary research to understand and influence how decisions are made at multiple levels to improve planning, design, adoption, and the successful and sustainable implementation of innovative stormwater management systems to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. The Center will use a variety of inquiry methods, data types, analysis systems and community engagement to build the body of information that will reframe and reduce institutional barriers for innovations in stormwater management through the adoption and implementation of green infrastructure.

Approach:

Integration across diverse disciplines has enabled the development of five distinct but highly linked research projects focusing on: 1) decision making and the cognitive and institutional barriers that prevent adoption of green infrastructure measures for stormwater management; 2) green infrastructure design and visualization for human perception in decision making; 3) hydrologic and water quality modeling for source control, infiltration, harvesting, and pollution retention; 4) nonhydrological benefits and citizen preferences for costs, ordinances, and values in comparison of green- and gray infrastructures; and 5) the critical nexus of public engagement and outreach in targeted regions. The fifth research component employs transformative regional engagement to ensure the research is informative and relevant to the green infrastructure and stormwater management decisions made at all levels. The five research projects are closely coordinated to sequentially and simultaneously achieve the stated research goals, utilizing and integrating a suite of tools that each discipline brings to bear including surveys, modeling, computerized visualization, and engagement techniques.

Expected Results:

Improved adoption by multiple levels of decision makers of green infrastructures that will significantly improve stormwater management in urban and suburban settings, reduce pollutant loads of nutrients, sediments, organics, and metals and diminish stormwater volume and energy produced from a range of storm event magnitudes.
