Model of Toxicant Response in Engineered Liver

EPA Grant Number: R834998
Title: Model of Toxicant Response in Engineered Liver
Investigators: Rajagopalan, Padmavathy
Current Investigators: Rajagopalan, Padmavathy , Murali, T. M. , Ehrich, Marion
Institution: Virginia Tech
EPA Project Officer: Chung, Serena
Project Period: June 1, 2011 through May 30, 2015
Project Amount: $750,000
RFA: Computational Toxicology: Biologically-Based Multi-Scale Modeling (2010) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Chemical Safety for Sustainability

Description:

This project proposes to:

  1. engineer a tissue to mimic liver behavior (a so-called 3-Dimensional or 3D liver model);
  2. simulate liver toxicity by exposing the 3D liver model to two known toxicants ( carbon tetrachloride and 1,2 dichloroethylene); and
  3. use gene microarrays and computational modeling to discover and elucidate biological pathways perturbed by each toxicant singly and in combination.
This research will provide the methods and data necessary to understand the effect of toxicants on the liver system. The project can ultimately lead to a better understanding of how chemicals manifest their toxicity across multiple types of liver cells, thus providing the knowledge to protect human health.
