Institution: University of California - Davis
EPA Project Officer: Chung, Serena
Project Period: March 6, 2006 through March 5, 2009 (Extended to March 5, 2011)
Project Period Covered by this Report: March 6, 2008 through March 5,2009
Project Amount: $372,168
RFA: Continuous Measurement Methods for Particulate Matter Composition (2005) RFA Text | Recipients Lists
Research Category: Particulate Matter , Air Quality and Air Toxics , Air
Objective:
A new cost-effective instrument is capable of analyzing the semi-volatile organic and inorganic gas phase precursors.
Progress Summary:
Dr. Zhang left the project and took a job with the California Air Resources Board before this year commenced. As a result, no direct progress on the research was made this year. Via funding from NSF, we are supporting the development of a better electrometer array that will be used for this project and others.
Future Activities:
In our last project report, our plan was that Dr. Zhao would continue the work of Dr. Zhang; however, since then, we have hired Dr. Sonya Collier to continue the project, starting August 1. Dr. Collier is completing her Ph.D. with professor Denis Phares at USC who also is working on ion mobility analysis of particulate air pollutants, so Sonya will come to us uniquely qualified to continue this work. Our plan is to merge our ion mobility cell with Dr. Phares' mass spectrometer to learn in more detail how ions are transported in our ion mobility cell. After that is understood and the NSF electrometer work is complete, the ion mobility cell and electrometer array will be combined to build the originally proposed instrument.
