Objective:

The objective is to fabricate, evaluate, and field test new instrumentation that can provide more information on the speciation of carbonaceous compounds in the atmosphere.

Progress Summary:

We have been working on developing a means to classify water-soluble and insoluble carbon based on the ease with which it is oxidized to CO2 by liquid phase radical and photooxidation processes. The evolved CO2 permeates through a membrane and directly affects the conductivity of a receptor liquid therein. We have developed a novel contactless means of measuring conductivity that in turn provides a direct measurement of the carbon contained in the particles.

The present effort is directed towards: (1) making a slurry type sampler to collect particles; (2) initially degassing the sample to remove dissolved CO2; (3) exposing the sample to UV radiation to perform photooxidation; (4) performing simultaneous or after-the-fact air (CO2-scrubbed) purging of the reaction mixture to determine photooxidized carbon and the kinetics of the CO2 formation; (5) measuring the evolved CO2 by exposing a receptor-filled membrane tube in the evolved gas stream and directly measuring the conductivity in a contactless fashion; and (6) repeating steps (3)-(5) with more aggressive oxidation techniques (e.g., putting in a suspension of TiO2 and then adding persulfate).

This system will provide a simpler, faster, and better alternative to thermooptical characterization of carbonaceous particles.

Future Activities:

We have recently moved from Texas Tech University to the University of Texas at Arlington. The project has gone through a Novation transfer. Basic research into classifying carbon on solution phase oxidation will continue.
