RFA: Targeted Research Center (2003) Recipients Lists
Research Category: Targeted Research

Objective:

This project is to establish a Center for Environmental Science as a joint effort of the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory. The broad mission of the Center is to enhance understanding of ways in which human activity, particularly urbanization, alters the chemical and physical environments to which large populations are exposed, with emphasis on local and regional atmospheric and surface conditions. Specific scientific objectives are (1) to develop empirical descriptions of the radiative, chemical and thermal environments of the Chicago area, and (2) to identify and evaluate the physical mechanisms responsible for altered air chemistry and regional climatic conditions.

Approach:

The Center will bring scientists who share expertise in environmental research together from a variety of disciplines. By formally connecting efforts at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory, the Center will create a critical mass of scientists whose research will focus on areas of direct relevance to important environmental problems. With initial funding the Center will undertake a study of trace gases and particulates in the urban atmosphere of Chicago. The Center will establish a measurements site on the University of Chicago campus to monitor the amount and absorbing properties of atmospheric particulate matter, gaseous air pollutant abundances, the dynamical structure of the urban boundary layer, and the solar and terrestrial radiation fields. The Center will apply a hierarchy of urban-scale and regional-scale models to interpret the database so as to define and evaluate mechanisms responsible for perturbations in local climate and chemical conditions in the urban area.

Expected Results:

The measurements and modeling will enhance our understanding of (1) the formation, transport and removal mechanisms of atmospheric gaseous and particulate pollutants in the Chicago urban area, including their relationship to prevailing meteorological regimes, (2) the absorbing properties and chemical makeup of urban particulate matter and (3) effects of gases and particulates on the solar and terrestrial radiation fields and associated feedbacks on photochemistry and the diurnal cycle of surface temperatures.
