Objective:

The main objective of this research project is to better define the physical and biological processes affecting the distribution of low oxygen through experiments with instrumentation, empirical relationships, and modeling. Development of technological capabilities and expanded modeling efforts will provide the necessary data sets to improve our research competitiveness, as well as support the development of human resources, particularly in public and graduate education. The project will address research questions about vertical and horizontal transport of oxygen, timing and duration of low oxygen, cross-shelf and alongshore dynamics, transformation of hypoxic water masses, and integration of the physics (winds and currents) with biological processes.

Progress Summary:

We continued the deployment of a standard instrument mooring with near-surface, middle, and bottom continuously recording oxygen meters, and added a bottom-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). Two short-term experiments were conducted with a nitrate meter, silicate meter, and light meter. We continue working with the Louisiana State University wave-current-surge information system (WAVCIS) group to develop real-time data capabilities. Data quality control and management was performed on multiple years of data to prepare them for data manipulations and analyses. Supplemental funding was procured.

Future Activities:

We will complete the real-time data component of our system. We also will prepare, present, and publish the final data syntheses and analyses.
