Objective:
The main objective of this research is to study the effectiveness of a hydrogen delivery system that will provide an electron donor for effective stimulation of biological reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvents. With the ECRS tank the objective is to gain an understanding of how much hydrogen gas can be pulsed in safely without breakthrough, and how long residual hydrogen bubbles persist in the groundwater before complete dissolution. This knowledge will ensure safety and minimal hydrogen use so that the most economically feasible treatment is applied in the field.
Progress Summary:
A tracer test was done to evaluate the variation in hydraulic conductivity in the ECRS tank at Rice University, this information will allow us to make better informed decisions for future injections of PCE and microbes. The test began with the injection of a six hour pulse input of 1000 mg/L bromide solution into the inlet of the ECRS tank on September 5, 2001 at 5:00 am. Approximately 400 samples of 50 to 100 mL were taken from 12 sample lines down the 18 ft length of the tank. The sampling schedule was developed using the 1-D Domenico and Robbins equation to estimate break through curves. A bromide probe, which gave readings in terms of milli-volts (mV), was used to analyze the samples. A calibration curve was developed from solutions of known bromide concentration, which allowed us to translate the mV readings to their corresponding concentrations in mg/L. From start to finish the test ran for 107 hours, ending on September 10th at 4:00 pm. The results seem to indicate that the ECRS tank is not packed evenly, with what appears to be areas of hard pack through the center that retard the mass of bromide flowing through. Despite the heterogeneity, the bromide mass was conserved and some general trends were seen. There was an uneven bromide front, with flow reaching the lines located ~ 2ft from the side walls appearing first, showing that the gravel pack did not fill up before it began leaving the area and the bromide solution didn't then move as a uniform wave as was predicted. Sampling locations 2 feet off the bottom at any location in the y-direction saw only trace amounts of bromide, on the order of 10 times less than their counterpart 1.5 ft below at the same x, y coordinate, demonstrating that there was almost no vertical mixing. Both of main sets of results lead us to believe that there is very low dispersion through the sand and the ECRS is very similar to field conditions marked with much heterogeneity. The tracer test proved to be very beneficial to the entire group and will serve as the foundation for all further experimental decisions.
Future Activities:
In the near future, PCE DNAPL will be added to the tank at the ECRS tank at Rice University. The PCE will be allowed to distribute under recirculate flow for two weeks in order to establish a residual high aqueous concentration of 10 to 30 mg/L. Following the PCE addition anaerobic conditions will be established by the addition of acetate. Once the ECRS has been made anaerobic, 30 gallons of microbe solution (10 mg/L biomass) will be added. Shortly afterwards, lactate will be added as an electron donor to help establish the microbe population. Then, if it is feasible, a hydrogen releasing compound (HRC) will be added to act as the electron donor for the remainder of the experiment. Dechlorination performance will be monitored with effluent samples to check for the presence of metabolites (TCE, DCE, VC, ethene). Future activities at a second ECRS tank run by Groundwater Services, Inc., will be very similar to those at Rice University with regard to motivation and goals. However, dissolved PCE will be used instead of DNAPL, and hydrogen gas will be used as the electron donor rather than lactate or HRC. The work has recently begun with helium safety tests to lay the framework for how we will go about the hydrogen injection. Through these safety tests we hope to be able to gain confidence in the pressure and duration of injection that will later allow to add hydrogen safely without breakthrough. Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR), which measures soil moisture (volumetric percent of water), will allow us to determine the amount of water displaced by injected gas and in turn, the amount of residual gas. By knowing the amount of hydrogen trapped in the subsurface we hope to be able to examine the effective zone of influence from each sparge point, the duration of hydrogen bubbles in the subsurface and later, the rate in which it is utilized by the microbes.
