Objective:

The three-year study was designed to address two important areas of hazardous work management:
  1. The reduction/elimination of hazardous waste; and
  2. The rapid chemical characterization of hazardous waste.

Summary/Accomplishments (Outputs/Outcomes):

In the first area, the specific objective of the project was the development and evaluation of a novel carbon generation process. In the second area, the objective was to develop supercritical fluid extraction-based methodologies for rapid chemical characterization of hazardous waste.

Adsorption is commonly used for the removal of hazardous organics from waste streams. Adsorbents that can be regenerated using supercritical fluids may provide significant cost and efficiency advantages. The methods may also have analytical chemistry applications.

Experiments have been carried out to determine the efficacy of desorption and regeneration of bonded alkyl siloxane adsorbents with supercritical carbon dioxide. Substances are desorbed and analyzed chromatographically. Sensitivities below parts per trillion can be measured with this method. Supercritical fluid extraction is being used to remove hazardous substances from soil.

Laboratory studies on the development of carbon regeneration process have been completed. The developed regeneration technology for granular activated carbon is effective. The process combines regeneration and destruction in a single step without the use of an external energy source. Its application for removal and destruction of polychlorinated biphenyls from transformer oils was also evaluated. The result revealed that carbon adsorption when coupled with a carbon regeneration oxidation procedure can be an effective process for removal and destruction of PCBs in mineral oil. The process is especially effective for the removal of highly toxic PCB congeners with non-ortho chlorine substitution.

Experiments to evaluate the applicability of supercritical fluid extraction for decontamination of soil and other solid matrices have been completed. The results show that supercritical fluid extraction technique can be used as a means to remove various xenobiotics from soil and is a promising technique for soil decontamination.

The results have been presented at scientific meetings and commuicated to interested parties. There is cooperation with Southern California Edison on this project.
