1998 Progress Report: A Regional Assessment of Land Use Effects on Ecosystem Structure and Function in the Central Grasslands

EPA Grant Number: R824993
Title: A Regional Assessment of Land Use Effects on Ecosystem Structure and Function in the Central Grasslands
Investigators: Burke, Ingrid C. , Mosier, Arvin , Pielke, Roger , Parton, William J. , Lauenroth, William K.
Institution: Colorado State University
EPA Project Officer: Chung, Serena
Project Period: October 1, 1996 through September 30, 1999
Project Period Covered by this Report: October 1, 1997 through September 30, 1998
Project Amount: $1,590,428
RFA: Global Climate (1996) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Ecological Indicators/Assessment/Restoration , Climate Change

Objective:

Our objective is to conduct an integrated assessment of landuse for the central grasslands of the U.S., utilizing the suite of databases and simulation models that we have developed over the past decade. Our research will provide estimates of the impact of landuse on ecosystem attributes (both structural and functional) at the regional scale and of the sensitivity of these ecosystem attributes to changes in climate.

Progress Summary:

The second year of the Central Grassland Region EPA Integrated Assessment has been very productive. We have 1) successfully continued field data collection on above- and below-ground net primary productivity and soil nutrient balance for row-crop and rangeland agricultural systems; 2) conducted regional analyses of aboveground net primary productivity using geographic data; 3) successfully installed two Bowen Ratio systems for wheat-fallow and irrigated corn ecosystems to assess net ecosystem production; 4) assessed regional impacts of landuse in eastern Colorado on aboveground productivity using remote sensing; 5) successfully summarized data on the effect of agricultural practices in the Great Plains on trace gas flux; 6) successfully developed a daily trace gas simulation model; and 6) successfully linked an ecosystem simulation model to a regional mesoscale model to evaluate the effects of landuse management on the Great Plains climatic system.

Future Activities:

During the coming year, we plan to collect additional data on carbon budgets for agricultural systems of the plains by collecting ecosystem scale data on productivity, as well as landscape scale data on net ecosystem productivity, to simulate the impacts of landuse management on carbon and nitrogen budgets and trace gas fluxes from the region, and to utilize remote sensing to assess the carbon status of the entire Great Plains region.
