The outreach components of the Hazardous Substances Research Center (HSRC) at Johns Hopkins University encompass two interrelated projects with distinct objectives. The first is to develop a web-based information dissemination resource to serve as an effective outreach strategy, broaden the impact of the HSRC, and encourage community action that is based upon research conducted in the HSRC. The web site will allow users to obtain continuously updated information generated by the HSRC and exchange information and best practices with one another. The second objective is to educate students in "real world" environmental problems. The aim is to assist students and faculty in their research and use of existing urban sites as the foundation of classroom projects.

A web site on hazardous substance issues and resources will be developed to provide information on the impact of HSRC research on communities in the Mid-Atlantic region. The site will facilitate communication among all constituencies who wish to participate in the remediation of contaminated sites in urban areas. Search capabilities will enable users to find information by keywords-e.g., researcher/author, hazardous substance, and geographical location. The site will contain broad categories of information including a home page identifying faculty in the HSRC; publication of research reports emanating from the Center with accompanying jargon-free abstracts; threaded asynchronous, monitored discussion groups; and links to the broad base JHU Environmental Network. Citizens groups with direct interest in the activities of the Center will identified through a web-based self registration mechanism so that information can be disseminated to them, either electronically or on paper. Design courses will be developed to provide students the opportunity to learn about ongoing Center technology and projects and the correct uses of data obtained from various research projects.

Expected Results:

The proposed web site will serve as an effective outreach strategy that broadens the impact of the HSRC and links the research conducted by its partner institutions. The web-based, asynchronous threaded discussion groups will allow participants to share information on best practices and Center-related research. The outreach component provides an opportunity to empower the community at large and develop a framework for sustainable collaboration between the multitude of stakeholders, both private and public. Student presentations made through the design course to the HSRC and HSRC stakeholders will enhance technology transfer. The site managers will benefit from the student expertise and technical resources of the Center.
